Kefalonia has a wild and natural beauty unlike any other Greek island. Due to the heavy rainfall over the winter, the island is lush with green vegetation, looking almost tropical.

Compared to the population, Kefalonia is physically a very large island which makes it ideal for hiking quiet trails unbothered by crowds and commercialization.

Fteri Beach

Hike along a valley that leads you to the famous and breathtaking Fteri Beach. A beach that can only be accessed through a half an hour hike or by the sea. Once you reach the beach, it is the perfect opportunity to swim and enjoy the strikingly blue sea with the striking contrast of the white cliffs.

This beach doesn’t have sunbeds so is best to enjoy and unwind before heading back up along the valley.

Koutsoupia Beach

One of the longest hikes, approximately 4 hours each way, this path is not for the faint-hearted. Beginning at the beautiful Anti-Samos beach, the hike begins with a steep uphill climb, reaching a peak for when the rest is downhill towards the idyllic Koutsoupia Beach that is only accessible with this hike and by the sea, resulting in a quiet and private place to relax.

This beach unbelievably picturesque and makes this challenging hike every bit worth it. The hills that you pass through are glazed with green vegetation, directly overlooking the sea. This is one of the beat ways to get a full picture of the island’s landscape and to add some adventure to your escape.

We advise to only do this hike in the cooler months as it is physically demanding. Immerse yourself in an island fairytale with the breathtaking views and surroundings.

Stone Bridge

Nestled amidst the verdant scenery, the Stone Bridge of Grizata path offers a journey of unparalleled beauty. Along with its accompanying watermills, you’ll be captivated by the enchanting nature surrounding you. Vibrant hues of wildflowers decorate the landscape, while the melodious sound of water flowing in the river creates a symphony of tranquillity.

Lefka Beach

Embark on an unforgettable guided hike along the rugged cliffs overlooking the pristine shores of Lefka beach. As you navigate the challenging path, each step reveals panoramic views of the boundless Ionian Sea, while Zakynthos Island looms in the distance.

Sissia Monastery

This hike takes you across the peninsula that hangs over Lourdas beach and is a great way to explore the local area surrounding the retreat. This begins as a gentle walk along Lourdas beach, taking you on a steep incline as you climb the peninsula. Heading across this expansive land you meet the Ancient Monastery of Sissia. The Monastery of Virgin Mary, founded during the 13th century. The ruins provide a beautiful historic monument to explore after the damage caused by the earthquakes in 1953.

A newer monastery has been rebuilt a bit further away, but the ruins still remain here.

Then you can proceed downhill towards Paradisi Beach, a beautiful and quiet place ideal for a quick swim or some morning meditation.

Enjoy the breathtaking views over the Ionian Sea as you enjoy this historic exploration.

Mount Ainos

Mount Ainos was first declared as a national park in 1962 and houses the heart of Kefalonia’s rich biodiversity.

The national park of Mount Ainos stretches over 3,000 hectares. It’s highest peak reaches 1,628m. Historically this peak was dedicated to Zues and believed to be the location of many offerings to this god.

This park is home to a unique species of fir tree called Abies Cephalonica

which only grows here at altitudes of 600-1600m and covers 2/3 of the park.

Equally as impressive, there’s a high chance that you encounter wild horses during your visit.

The drive to the mountain is about 45 minutes each way. On this hike you can reach the peak of the mountain, giving you an incredible views all the way down to the beach. You have views over the whole island, surrounding islands and sometimes even mainland Greece.

This is a very unique hike to be able to do on a Greek island.

These are just some of the many hikes throughout Kefalonia that are waiting for you to discover. May, June and October are the ideal times of the season to hike around Kefalonia given the cooler temperatures and the flexibility of not being restricted by high temperatures during the day.
