GREEK EASTER: A TIME OF TRADITION AND TOGETHERNESS

EXPERIENCE TIMELESS TRADITIONS AND SPIRITUAL CONNECTIONS

Easter in Greece is more than a holiday—it’s a deeply spiritual and cultural celebration, marked by centuries-old customs, heartfelt gatherings and symbolic rituals. As the most important religious holiday in the Greek Orthodox calendar, Easter brings families and communities together to celebrate rebirth, renewal and joy.

Holy Week Preparations

The week leading up to Easter, known as Holy Week (Megali Evdomada), is filled with anticipation and reflection. Churches across the country hold daily services and homes are cleaned and prepared for the celebrations. On Holy Thursday, Greeks dye eggs a deep red to symbolize the blood of Christ—these eggs play a central role in the festive customs that follow.

Good Friday and Resurrection Night

On Good Friday, solemn processions take place in every village and town, where the epitaphios (a symbolic bier of Christ) is carried through the streets, accompanied by candlelight and hymns. Saturday night marks the Resurrection—at midnight, churches erupt in joy as the priest proclaims “Christos Anesti” (“Christ is Risen”) and fireworks light up the sky. People return home holding their lit candles, a symbol of new light and hope.

The Easter Feast

On Easter Sunday, fasting ends with a festive meal featuring lamb roasted on the spit, traditional dishes like kokoretsi and a joyful atmosphere. Families gather outdoors, music plays and red egg cracking competitions begin. It’s a celebration of life, love and renewal—a perfect reflection of Greek hospitality and warmth.

SPECIAL KEFALONIA’S TRADITION: CLAY POT BREAKING

One of the most unique and vibrant Easter traditions in Kefalonia is the breaking of the “stamna” (clay pot) on Holy Saturday. As the church bells ring to announce the Resurrection, locals gather in the squares—especially in Argostoli—and joyfully smash large clay pots filled with water, symbolizing the end of Lent and the casting away of evil. This centuries-old custom is both loud and spectacular, creating a powerful sense of renewal and celebration, while bringing communities together in a moment of shared joy and cultural pride.
